Speculative Refactoring

Is there such a thing as a “beautiful” algorithm?

As developers, we often talk about code quality in terms of performance or maintainability. But there is a third dimension: elegance.

The Aesthetic of Efficiency

A truly elegant piece of code does exactly what it needs to do with the minimum amount of noise. It feels inevitable. When you read it, you think, “Of course. How else could it be?”

This is “speculative refactoring.” It’s the act of cleaning code not just because it needs to run faster, but because it deserves to be better.

Coding as Craft

We are craftsmen. Our medium is logic. Our tools are languages. And like any craftsman, we should take pride in the hidden parts of our work. Even the parts the user will never see should be beautiful.
